Genevieve's been telling jokes for a few years and for the most part they fall pretty flat. Lately she has come home with some cute ones though her timing could use a little work. Sophie is still pretty baffled by jokes and laughs at the wrong parts but I can't blame her as I've been guilty of that myself from time to time.
For those that don't speak Sophie the text is: "Why chickens don't have chairs? Why do chickens don't have to sit on their eggs because they don't have chairs."
Sophie Translation: "Why did the gorilla gets a monkey on his head? Because he don't have a head bone"
Sophie Translation: "Gorillas sit on his eggs because he doesn't have any chairs."
Sophie's three year check-up went really well today. The doctor wanted to know if I was going to perform the exam since I should know it by heart. He said Sophie is obviously a very healthy and well-adjusted kid. She happily danced around the exam room in her birthday suit until the finger prick. She's still whimpering about that one.
Sophie has been excited all week for the big 03. She was told that her party is this weekend and that her birthday was on Saturday. Well Saturday rolled around and Carrie sang her Happy Birthday. Sophie broke out in tears and told her to stop singing. Was she upset that she was getting older? Nope. "Today isn't my birthday. Tomorrow is my birthday." "No, tomorrow is your birthday party. Today is your birthday." "Are my friends coming today?" "No, they are coming tomorrow for your party." "Today is not my birthday." Eventually she warmed up to the idea when some presents came out. Nothing says 'birthday' like ripping open a gift.
On an unrelated note, Genevieve and Sophie really like They Might Be Giants. they both love "Istanbul, Not Constantinople." For a while Sophie would ask, to our complete confusion, to hear the "Bull" song. The words are a little fast for Genevieve but it is funny to hear her sing: "Even old New York was once new Hamsterdam."
Jonah has been speed crawling around the house for a few weeks now and is just about ready for cruising. He climbs to a standing position on things and starts to bounce. Today, Carrie put him on a little bouncing toy and he had a blast.
He has also started speaking. When he is done with his meals, he will say "Duh" for done and wave his hands frantically about. He tries to do the sign language motion for all-done but instead it looks more like he is trying to take flight. He also can say kitty and daddy. We weren't certain about that last one but he seems to say it whenever I walk into a room where he is. He usually uses the word kitty, which is a little more guttural than necessary, while chasing noodles around the house. She doesn't seem to mind too much.
We transitioned Sophie to a big girl bed. It took her about two weeks before she realized she can get out on her own. She is actually good about staying in bed during nap times. I recall Genevieve getting out of bed more than Sophie has. She usually only gets out on her own in the morning. It is cute to walk in to find them both sitting on G's bed reading books.
Here is a picture of Sophie posing in her new bed.
