Yo Yo Yo

Sophie asked me this morning, "Can I have a yo-yo one day?"  "Sure," I said, "you can have a yo-yo."  "I want a yo-yo," Jonah said happily and ran out of the room.   He came back a minute later with a big bag of oreos.  "I want oyoyo.  I want oyoyo."

Kids hear what they want to hear.

Writer's Workshop

Genevieve has had a piece of writing picked by her teacher to be in a writing contest. We have not seen this piece of writing as it was done at school. After a few minutes of leading questions we determined that only four children from her class were picked to submit writing. Genevieve had no idea that this was an honor.

Sophie has been teaching herself to read for about a year now and is a pretty solid reader. Today I learned that she is also teaching herself to write. While I was cooking breakfast this morning, she told me that she was writing a letter to Grandpa. This isn't an uncommon occurrence but it is usually some scribbling, a few stickers and some rubber stamps. Today I was totally surprised by what she produced.
If you are having trouble with the text it says "Dis is for Grandpa" You might think that her spelling is off but that is how she says it. She doesn't quite discriminate the "th" from the "d" sound just yet.  It could be her Brooklyn ancestry.

making sense of the world

Jonah has been trying to make sense of the world. He is a pretty good communicator with a very large vocabulary. However there are a few times where his words while intelligible are still misunderstood. This causes frustration for both him and us. The other day we were having burritos for dinner when the following conversation ensued:

Jonah: "Quesadilla." gesturing at the bag of tortillas.
Me: "Those are tortillas. Do you want some tortilla?"
Jonah: "Quesadilla"
Me: "Here is some tortilla." ripping him a small piece of tortilla.
Jonah: "No. Cheese."
Me: "You want cheese? Carrie can you cut him a slice of cheese?"
Jonah: "No want cheese."
Me: "Would you make up your mind? Cheese or no cheese?"
Jonah: "Quesadilla" Me: "Tortilla!!!"

I thought he had his words confused but clearly he wanted me to make him a quesadilla; unfortunately I didn't figure it out until the next day.

Yesterday in the car, Carrie had the following conversation.
Jonah: "Different Song"
Carrie: "Okay." click
Jonah: "Different Song"
Carrie: "Okay." click
Jonah: "Different Song"
Carrie: "Okay." click
Jonah: "Different Song"
Carrie: "Okay." click
Jonah: "Different Song"
Carrie: "Jonah, that is every song on the CD."
Jonah: "Different Song!!!!"
Carrie: "Oh!!! You want the 'Different' song; here you go." click

Laser Pointer

We got a laser pointer for the cat. Jonah loves it just as much as noodles. Sophie and Genevieve are excited by the idea of making Jonah run around the house like a kitten.
