The windy apple

Genevieve and I took a trip this past weekend to Washington DC. We went to visit my cousins who were in from Israel. Tamar is only a few months younger than Genevieve but speaks as much English as Genevieve speaks Hebrew. Even though they didn't understand each other, they had a great time. Periodically, they would ask us what the other had said; but most of the time I think it was self explanatory. By the end they were both saying "Thank You" and "You're Welcome" in a different language than when they had started.

We took Amtrak to get there; the train left just after bedtime. Hoping that G would sleep I set her up on two seats by herself and sat across the aisle from her. Every time the train stopped she would sit straight up and ask if we were in Washington. After awhile I gave up and just let her play in the seat. She finally passed out about an hour before we got there. The next day she woke up her usual time but did not nap; the following day she woke up at 6AM. Sleep eventually caught up with her and she napped from 2PM until 6PM. On the train home she didn't go to sleep right away but she slept for almost 2 1/2 hours. Needless to say she was still quite exhausted today.

While in DC we went to the several Smithsonian facilities: the natural history museum, the sculpture garden at the modern art museum and the National Zoo. We also spent quite a bit of time walking the mall and even took a ride on the carousel.

Ready for our trip but soon asleep on the train

Enjoying the Zoo

Just horsing around

I think I saw a movie star hanging out at the fountain.

The wonders of a carousel.

Sharing: snack, secret, bath

And finally somebody with way too much sugar in their system.

A Cut Above

Today Genevieve got her first haircut. I know a lot of parents give their kids haircuts at around a year or so, but I wanted to wait until (a) Genevieve really needed one (she had split ends and really bad tangles) and (b) Genevieve was old enough to say she wanted one. The second part is key since I was definitely afraid of traumatizing her for life and making every subsequent haircut a nightmare. Genevieve and I have been pretending to cut each other's hair for a while now with her bug catcher (her idea) so I thought she was finally ready.

We went to a place that specializes in children's haircuts. They have pink Barbie jeeps and red race cars for chairs. The child gets to pick his/her favorite video to watch while in the chair. While this cost twice as much as it should have you can see from the pictures below that she loved every minute of it. If only I could think of a way to make the dentist seem this much fun.

Unimpressed

There was a petting zoo at Genevieve's camp today. I thought this was very cool and that Genevieve would love it. When I picked her up I asked her what animals she got to see today. She sighed and said, "You know, sheep, goats, rabbits. Can we go get some cookies?"

She told me that next year they will have frogs and seemed pretty excited about that. I assume she asked about them.

Campy

Genevieve started summer camp last week. Two days a week she gets to play with her friends in the playground, run in the sprinklers, do something "creative" like paint, and eat cookies and pizza to her heart's content. I need to go to summer camp.

Here is Genevieve sporting the latest in summer camp fashion. We try to put sunscreen on her any time she will be outside for more than 20 minutes but she already has a tan.

We decided not to open our pool this year since we didn't think we would be able to get much use out of it. Genevieve's Grandmother was kind enough to pick up a smaller pool for Genevieve so she could beat the summer heat. Genevieve is pretty happy with it.
